Developing excellent habits that lead to the best choices

Justin is capable of offering direct help and tutoring at middle and high school levels in all MESH (Math, English, Science, History) courses, along with many electives.

Technology Control &

the Home Environment

The elements competing for your child or teen’s attention in the 21st century are unprecedented: Cell Phones, Tablets, Facebook, Instagram and a host of interactive video games are facts of our lives. If unchecked, they can take up the majority of a student’s time at home after school. These devices are never more than an arm’s length away. While phones are forbidden by teachers and are routinely confiscated in schools, the same rules often do not apply at home: Parents do not want to be the enemy of their own child, but limiting screen time has a direct correlation to student involvement in homework.

Justin will confront this issue directly by working with students in a phone free environment—sitting down with parent and student to have the child commit to phone free time, both with Justin during the tutoring session, and when he is not there– promoting an ethos of structured study time throughout the week.

Mindset

Developing Grit

Grit has been variously defined as ‘courage and resolve, strength of character', “Firmness of mind or spirit’, ‘Perseverance, determination, toughness, guts’ etc., but the truth is, grit is composed of many more nuanced qualities: Courage, tenacity, meticulousness, being achievement oriented rather than self-controlled and dependable, possessing of long term goals and the follow through necessary to make them happen, resilient in the face of failure and having the ability to begin anew with optimism, and a striving for excellence rather than perfection.

The concept of Grit is multifaceted and elusive- but one thing is certain: It can be taught.

The analogy of coach or manager is particularly helpful in understanding how Waite Educational Consulting develops grit in students. Pressure makes diamonds... and more often than not it is pressure and high expectations that drive students to achieve. Other times taking one’s foot off the gas pedal is necessary to allow the student to reset. But ultimately, nothing can take the place of persistence, and the truth that to get something that you have never had, you have to do something that you have never done. In life, you can get bitter or you can get better. Waite Educational Consulting will get your child on the path of confidence and achievement.

Motivation

Turning Frustration
into Fascination

What are we trying to do?... and why are we trying to do it?... Motivation can be difficult for students of all levels.

Setting long-term goals that are specific and measurable is necessary- for certain. However, studies have shown that long-term goals have proven insufficient to keep a student motivated day to day, and week to week. Waite Educational Consulting has its primary focus on Process, establishing intrinsic drivers such as finding meaning in the moment, sustaining interest through curiosity, and working hard for integrity’s sake. Truly successful people and students- high achievers- forget their endgame goal and commit to the activity of continuous engagement. Their possible futures, options, and dreams are forgotten about as their practice takes on a much more mundane aspect. They live in the footwork business, not in the results business. As they move from proficiency to mastery, the results take care of themselves.

An attitude of openness is key. One cannot rely on one's own understanding to get them the best in life. Attitude is the endgame, and curiosity breeds a love of learning. You don’t have to believe in something in order to do it. Success isn’t success unless you are happy. Developing the inward motivation to grow is a key feature of Waite Educational Consulting.

Testimonials

Waite Educational Consulting believes that success comes from involvement –strong relationships. Students, parents, and teachers work in concert, but when a student is having trouble in school, there is often a disconnect. Lines of communication have dropped, and open and productive dialogue has trailed off. The support necessary for academic growth has vanished.  While teachers are important in motivating students in the classroom, -the home environment- where a student completes most of their coursework- is of primary importance.

WEC facilitates relationships and fosters involvement, serving as a liaison between parent, student and teacher, as well as serving as tutor. Building bridges, reestablishing trust, and setting goals- these activities are just as important as tutoring a teen or assisting in their schoolwork. This dynamic enables a new and positive approach to school and education.

Only through the cooperation of student, tutor, parent, and teacher are the best and lasting results achieved. WEC can help students produce work that they are proud of, which their parents can recognize, and which pushes them on to higher heights.
